2026 Baccalaureate retake : dates, eligibility threshold and how to prepare to ace your oral exams

You didn’t reach the pass mark in the first round of the baccalaureate and you’re wondering what happens next? The baccalaureate retake is a second chance offered to candidates whose overall average is between 8 and 9.99/20.

The deadline for retake orals is set by the French Ministry of Education and is the same in every academy: until 9 July 2026, and at the latest 10 July at noon.

However, it is the time when the first-round results are published which varies depending on your academy, that triggers your individual summons for the oral exam. Here is everything you need to know about the baccalaureate retake: how it works, academy-by-academy dates, and eligibility conditions.

Key points to remember :

  • Eligibility threshold: overall average between 8/20 and 9.99/20 after the first group of exams (and 10/20 in vocational subjects for the vocational baccalaureate).
  • Below 8/20: failed, no retake possible.
  • General and technological baccalaureate: 2 oral exams, 20 minutes of preparation then 20 minutes of oral (presentation + Q&A).
  • Vocational baccalaureate: 2 oral exams, 15 minutes of preparation then 15 minutes of oral, officially called an “épreuve de contrôle”.
  • 2026 dates: results on Tuesday 7 July, orals until Thursday 9 July, and at the latest Friday 10 July at noon.
  • Only the better mark between the written exam and the oral retake counts: you cannot lose points.
  • New in 2026: the jury “boost” (bonus points added to the overall average) is now capped at 0.5 points.

Eligibility threshold : who can take the baccalaureate retake?

Overall average Outcome
10/20 or higher Admitted directly, no resit needed
Between 8/20 and 9.99/20 Eligible for the resit (second group)
Below 8/20 Failed outright, resit not possible

For the vocational baccalaureate, there is an additional condition: you must have at least 10/20 in the vocational exams, in addition to an overall average between 8 and 9.99/20.

The baccalaureate is calculated out of 2,000 points. An average of 10/20 corresponds to 1,000 points. A candidate eligible for the retake therefore has between 800 and 999 points, meaning up to 200 points can be recovered.

⚠️ New in 2026: a decree dated 4 December 2025 now caps at 0.5 points the jury “boost” that can be added to the overall average (often referred to as “jury points”) (source: Decree No. 2025-1159 of 4 December 2025, service-public.gouv.fr). Until now, this bonus could be more generous and allowed some candidates close to the pass mark to obtain the baccalaureate without taking the retake. The cap makes earning the diploma more demanding as of the 2026 session.

How the general and technological baccalaureate retake works

Here’s how the retake exam works for candidates in the general and technological baccalaureate:

  • The candidate chooses 2 subjects among those taken as written exams in the final year (excluding specialities dropped after the first year, and excluding optional subjects).
  • Each oral includes 20 minutes of preparation, followed by 20 minutes in front of the examiner: a presentation (about 10 minutes) then an interview with the jury (about 10 minutes). Total: 40 minutes per subject.
  • The jury is made up of teachers in the subject concerned, often those who corrected papers in the main session.
  • The retake oral has the same coefficient as the written exam it replaces.
  • The better mark between the written exam and the oral is used in the final calculation. You cannot lose points.
  • Registration takes place when you receive your marks transcript, in the school where results are posted.

How the vocational baccalaureate retake works

The vocational baccalaureate does not work exactly like the general baccalaureate. Officially, it is called an “épreuve de contrôle”:

  • Double eligibility condition: overall average between 8/20 and 9.99/20, and an average of at least 10/20 in the vocational exams.
  • 2 oral interrogations of 15 minutes each (a presentation of about 5 minutes then an interview with the examiner), preceded by 15 minutes of preparation for each.
  • The two subjects are chosen among those provided for in the exam regulations for the candidate’s speciality.
  • Same marking principle: only the better mark between the written exam and the oral counts.

Good to know: with 96 recoverable points on a speciality with coefficient 16 (for example, improving from 6 to 12), the choice of subjects can make a real difference.

Tip: oral exams usually take place within 24 to 48 hours after registration. Plan to stay available as soon as your average is announced.

Replacement session: the difference from the retake

  • Retake: for candidates who sat all exams in the main session, with an overall average between 8 and 9.99/20.
  • Replacement session: for candidates absent from the initial exam due to illness or justified force majeure.
  • 2026 replacement session dates (general baccalaureate): Monday 7 to Thursday 10 September 2026.
  • 2026 replacement session dates (vocational baccalaureate): 7 to 11 September, then 14 to 17 September 2026.

Choosing your subjects: a 4-step method

  1. Step 1: calculate the points you are missing to reach 1,000 (mark x coefficient for each subject).
  2. Step 2: identify your two lowest marks among high-coefficient subjects (specialities: coefficient 16).
  3. Step 3: choose subjects where you can realistically improve orally, even if your written mark was low.
  4. Step 4: avoid subjects where your written mark was already decent; the potential gain may not justify the effort.

Subjects like philosophy, history and geography, or economics and social sciences are often easier to structure orally than hard sciences.

Revising in 48 hours: what really works

  • Re-read only the revision sheets you already made during the year, not the entire course.
  • Recite key concepts out loud in each subject to train for the oral.
  • Simulate the exam with a relative or friend, under jury-like conditions.
  • Work on structure: introduction, development, conclusion.
  • For French or philosophy, topics usually stay close to what was studied in class.

According to Superprof, about 10% of baccalaureate candidates obtain the diploma each year thanks to the retake.

Advice: email your teachers right after results are published. Many are still available to answer a few questions remotely.

After the baccalaureate: student housing

Once you have the baccalaureate, the next step is often moving for the start of the academic year. UXCO Student offers student residences across France and it is best to book without waiting for retake results.
