LIVING IN PAU

The capital of its administrative district or département, the city of Pau now has more than 200,000 inhabitants. Ideally located at the foot of the Pyrenees, the city benefits from an exceptional geographic location, about an hour from the ski slopes and from the Atlantic Ocean. Crossed to the South by the river Gave, it also affords a breathtaking panoramic view of the Pyrenees mountain range. Its architecture features some medieval aspects alongside Victorian-era houses, English-style gardens and modern high-rise tower blocks. An attractive mixture of architectural styles that provides a distinctive character to the city centre.

Last but not least, to the South, you can see the vineyards on the slopes of the Jurançon, a hallmark symbol of the local gastronomy scene. Living in Pau also means living in a city rich in high-quality infrastructure: the gigantic Halles indoor market, the Zénith concert venue and the Centre des Congrès, or conference centre. BE A STUDENT IN PAU

For entertainment, the Boulevard des Pyrénées and its many bars and restaurants is the ideal meeting place for all students. You may or may not be a rugby fan. In any event, every year the Hameau stadium hosts several matches in the Section Paloise progressing to the Top 14, evenings packed with entertainment on offer right across the city.

Last but not least, every year in April, Pau also organises a student rally event specifically for new arrivals in the city. A day during which teams of several young people go head-to-head to demonstrate their knowledge of the city of Pau, their musical culture, their creativity and their curiosity, in a no-holds-barred race right across the city during which they come up against numerous unlikely challenges. The day ends with an evening of electro music organised by a local group of musicians.

And out and about around Pau? Nestling at the foot of the Pyrenees, it is the ideal spot for winter sport enthusiasts, located just 45 minutes from the closest ski resorts. And for those who prefer beach sports, the Basque coastline and the cities of Bayonne and Biarritz are just an hour and a half away: ideal for a surfing and beach getaway with friends. Last but not least, for a city break or a shopping weekend, Toulouse and Bordeaux are also readily accessible by motorway.
