Rouen, the land of impressionism, packed with history and potential for a great student lifestyle!

Rouen is a city with a population of over 110,000, located half way between Paris and the famous Normandy beaches. Boasting an exceptional historic heritage and virtually unique in France, it offers a pleasant living environment that attracts an increasing number of visitors. The town that inspired large numbers of French masters such as painter Claude Monet and writer Gustave Flaubert is now a vibrant, much sought-after student town. UXCO Student chose this small city in the North of France as a perfect location for student accommodation. More than 200 apartments, most of them studios, are offered for rental in our residences.

Nicknamed the "city of a hundred spires" by Victor Hugo, Greater Rouen is a conurbation with a population of 406,000 located in the region of Normandy. Classified as a City of Art and History, Rouen has the highest number of listed buildings per head in France! And to discover these, nothing beats a gentle stroll through the streets of the historic centre: Rue Saint-Romain with its medieval charm created by the last half-timbered houses that line it; Rue Damiette in the heart of the Antiques district (the Quartier des Antiquaires); the Rue du Gros Horloge, home of Rouen's famous clock and which leads to the Cathedral of Our Lady of Rouen, the most iconic building in the city; the Place du Vieux Marché, or old market square, so symbolic in the history of France for being where Joan of Arc was burnt at the stake in 1431 and where you can visit the famous Joan of Arc tower, the Tour Jeanne d'Arc. Then, you could visit the banks of the river Seine with their very industrial architecture, a lovely place for a relaxing walk or to soak up some art at Panorama XXL, a cultural site unique in France.

And for food-lovers, there is the Fête du Ventre et de la Gastronomie Normande, held every year on the third weekend in October. You could also sample traditional macarons, sweet treats and other Rouen specialities.

Rouen is a great city in which to live and study. Its 45,000 students enjoy a wide range of higher education courses at its two University Technology Institutes, its IPAG business school, IAE management school, ESPE teacher-training school, ESITech school of engineering and university centre for continuing education. When it comes to activities, Rouen organises a range of cultural and festive events every year, such as the Normandy Impressionist Festival (more than 450 multidisciplinary events including exhibitions, live performances and festive gatherings), the illumination of the cathedral, the Thursday terraces in July, and the free concerts on the Waddington peninsula, featuring performances by the big names of the Chanson Française tradition. As a little bonus, the brand new and renowned Golf de Rouen Mont-Saint-Aignan offers preferential rates for student golfers, or for those keen to find a new passion.

Public transport is provided by the Astuce network, which offers special student rates to help you spend less getting around (€247.50 for an annual pass or €20.87 for a monthly pass). In short, Rouen is an ideal city for students!

PS: It even boasts the No. 1 spot in the Top Ten French cities with the highest number of bars!!! Interesting, hey?

What else is there around Rouen? If you fancy taking a break, here are some of the best things to try in the surrounding area: take a Segway tour of Le Havre, try out some watersports in Deauville, escape into virtual reality at the Caen VR theme park, or perhaps spend some time on the Normandy landing beaches.
