If optics and photonics mean something to you, the Institut d’Optique Graduate School (IOGS) Rhône-Alpes is your place! Here, we don’t just play with light—we study it, exploit it, and innovate with it. Located in Saint-Étienne, this campus trains engineers, researchers, and entrepreneurs who are set to revolutionize tomorrow’s world.
IOGS primarily offers an engineering degree in optics and photonics after a first common year in Paris-Saclay. You can also pursue a Master’s degree or even prepare a PhD if you want to take your scientific research further. The school also actively promotes entrepreneurship, so if you’re planning to start your own tech company, you’ll get plenty of support.
Let’s be honest—it’s demanding. Optics and photonics combine physics, mathematics, engineering, and hands-on experimentation. So yes, you’ll need to be focused and hardworking. But you won’t be alone: the environment is friendly, there’s a strong sense of peer support, and the professors are really approachable.
You can apply through the Centrale-Supélec competitive exam after a scientific preparatory course (MP, PC, PSI, PT, etc.). If you already have a Bac +3 in physics, mathematics, or engineering, you can apply via academic application. The key is to have a genuine passion for optics and new technologies. If that’s you, go ahead and apply!
You could work in aerospace, designing optical instruments for satellites and space missions. Interested in medicine? You could help develop medical imaging, laser-assisted surgery, or biophotonics. Want to shake up telecommunications? Fiber optic networks, augmented reality, and quantum cybersecurity are booming sectors.
