Irstea’s mission is to develop integrative environmental research focused on both public and private action. As France’s leading research operator in the field of water, its area of investigation is territorial, addressing the interfaces between “agriculture–environment” and “rural–urban” issues.
Irstea is a public scientific and technological institution under the joint supervision of the French Ministries of Research and Agriculture. Since 2020, INRAE and IRSTEA have been merged to form a single establishment, the first of its kind in France.
